The KIHD prospective cohort (Laukkanen et al., 2015; PMID 25705824) is the key reference. It followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men (aged 42–60) and compared sauna-use frequency against mortality over roughly 20 years:

Important context: this is an observational association in one cohort of Finnish men, not evidence that sauna use causes lower mortality. People who sauna more often may differ in health, income and activity levels in ways the study could not fully adjust for. The pattern is consistent enough to suggest that regularity matters more than any single session, but it should not be read as "more is always better" — no trial has tested increasing sauna frequency as an intervention (Laukkanen et al., 2018; Hussain & Cohen, 2018).

Beginner Protocol (Weeks 1–4)

Customary practice, not a trial-tested protocol.

Weeks 1–2: 1–2 sessions/week, 5–10 minutes, lower temperature (70–80°C traditional; 40–50°C infrared). Focus: acclimatisation.

Adding Contrast Therapy

Essential Habits

  • Hydrate: Drink water before your session and replace what you lose through sweat afterwards. Dehydration and a drop in blood pressure on standing are the routine risks of sauna use (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001).
  • No alcohol: Never combine alcohol with sauna. In a Finnish death-register analysis of hyperthermia deaths, alcohol was the dominant contributing factor (Kortelainen, 1991).
  • Exit warning signs: Dizziness, nausea, cessation of sweating, chest tightness — exit immediately.
  • Know the contraindications: Sauna is not appropriate for everyone. Unstable angina, recent heart attack and severe aortic stenosis are recognised contraindications, and anyone with a cardiac condition or who is pregnant should speak to their doctor first (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001).
