Can You Sauna Every Day?

Yes — With Some Important Caveats
For most healthy adults without contraindications, sauna bathing is well tolerated, and there is no evidence that using it on consecutive days is harmful (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001; Laukkanen et al., 2018). Whether daily use is better than a few times a week is a different question, and the honest answer is that we only have observational evidence to go on. The landmark Finnish KIHD study followed 2,315 middle-aged men for a median of 20.7 years and found that men who reported using the sauna 4–7 times per week had lower rates of sudden cardiac death and fatal cardiovascular events than men who used it once per week (Laukkanen et al., 2015).
That study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine by Professor Jari Laukkanen's group, reported a dose-response pattern: the more frequently men used the sauna, the lower their event rates. It is important to be precise about what this does and does not show. It is an observational association in a cohort of Finnish men, not a trial, and the most frequent category was "4–7 times per week" — the study did not separate out people who saunaed exactly seven days a week, so it cannot tell us that daily use specifically is the optimal dose: PubMed: 25705824.
What the Research Shows About Frequency
Below are the adjusted hazard ratios for sudden cardiac death reported in the KIHD cohort, compared with men who used the sauna once per week. A hazard ratio below 1.00 means a lower rate in that group; it does not mean the sauna caused the difference.

Similar inverse associations were reported for fatal coronary heart disease, fatal cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality (P for trend ≤ .005), though the published abstract does not break those outcomes down by frequency group in the same way (Laukkanen et al., 2015).
These figures come from models adjusted for a range of confounding variables, including cardiovascular risk factors and lifestyle. Even so, correlation does not establish causation: men who sauna most often may differ from men who sauna least often in ways no statistical model fully captures — they may be healthier to begin with, less unwell, more socially connected, or simply more able to. Read the dose-response pattern as a promising signal that warrants trials, not as proof that adding sauna sessions will add years.
Is Daily Sauna Safe?
For healthy adults without cardiovascular contraindications, sauna bathing is described as well tolerated in clinical reviews of the evidence (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001; Laukkanen et al., 2018). Key considerations:
- Hydration: A sauna session causes meaningful fluid loss through sweating. Drink before and after every session, and treat this as more important, not less, if you are going in most days.
- Electrolytes: Regular users sometimes find sodium and electrolyte replenishment helpful, particularly on a low-sodium diet. This is practical experience rather than a well-studied protocol.
- Duration management: Rather than pushing sessions longer to "make them count", most regular users settle into a comfortable, repeatable session length. Worth noting: in the KIHD cohort it was the longer sessions (over 19 minutes) that carried the strongest association with lower sudden cardiac death, not the shorter ones (Laukkanen et al., 2015) — so there is no evidence-based reason to cut sessions short simply because you go often.
- Alcohol: Never combine alcohol with the sauna. Drinking during sauna bathing raises the risk of hypotension, arrhythmia and sudden death, and alcohol is the dominant co-factor in Finnish sauna-related hyperthermia deaths (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001; Kortelainen, 1991).
- Listen to your body: Days of illness, fever, or significant dehydration are appropriate reasons to skip a session.
Daily Sauna and Strength Training
One important caveat: post-exercise cold water immersion (and possibly, though this is less studied, sauna use) immediately after resistance training may blunt some hypertrophy and strength adaptations. A 2015 study by Roberts et al. in the Journal of Physiology found that regular cold water immersion after strength training attenuated acute anabolic signalling and long-term gains in muscle mass and strength across a 12-week programme: PubMed: 26174323.
The evidence is much less clear for sauna specifically — heat and cold are not interchangeable, and this finding should not simply be transferred across. If hypertrophy is your primary goal, a cautious approach is to separate post-strength-training sauna sessions by several hours, or to use the sauna on non-training days. That is a precaution rather than an established requirement.
Daily Sauna Protocols
The routines below reflect common practice and the conditions used in Finnish sauna research (traditional saunas, typically 80–100°C). They are starting points, not clinically validated prescriptions — no trial has tested one daily protocol against another for health outcomes.
For General Health and Longevity
- 1–2 rounds at a duration and temperature you can tolerate comfortably
- Cool shower or cold plunge between rounds, if you enjoy contrast bathing
- Morning or evening — there is no good comparative evidence that one beats the other
For Athletic Recovery (High-Training Volume)
- Post-training (aerobic/team sports): a sauna round followed by cool-down or cold immersion, to comfort
- Consider separating sauna from heavy strength training if hypertrophy is a priority (see above)
For Relaxation and Wind-Down
- Evening sessions, finishing well before bed
- 1–2 rounds
- Many people report the post-sauna cooling phase feels calming and sleep-promoting. We have not found good controlled evidence in consumer saunas to support a specific sleep mechanism, so treat this as reported experience rather than an established effect.
When Daily Sauna Is NOT Appropriate
- Unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction, or severe aortic stenosis — these are recognised contraindications to sauna bathing (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001). If you have any cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension, speak to your cardiologist first.
- Pregnancy, especially the first trimester — avoid the sauna in the first trimester and consult your doctor. A meta-analysis of maternal hyperthermia in early pregnancy found an increased risk of neural tube defects (pooled OR 1.93, 95% CI 1.53–2.42; Moretti et al., 2005), and a prospective cohort of 23,491 pregnancies reported a higher rate of neural tube defects after first-trimester hot tub or sauna exposure (Milunsky et al., 1992).
- Active infection or fever — skip the sauna during acute illness.
- Severe dehydration — never enter a sauna when significantly dehydrated.
- After alcohol consumption — alcohol impairs thermoregulation and raises the risk of hypotension, arrhythmia and sudden death in the sauna (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001; Kortelainen, 1991).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you sauna twice a day?
The cohort research on sauna frequency measured sessions per week, not sessions per day, and twice-daily use has not been studied for health outcomes. It would also increase fluid demands. For most people, one unhurried daily session makes more sense than two rushed ones.
Do you need rest days from sauna?
This has not been directly tested, so there is no evidence either way that scheduled rest days are physiologically necessary — unlike the well-established need for recovery from resistance training. In the Finnish cohort data, men in the highest category used the sauna 4–7 times a week over decades without a signal of harm (Laukkanen et al., 2015). If you feel well and well-hydrated, and you have no contraindications, there is no known reason healthy adults must take days off.
How long should a daily sauna session be?
In the KIHD cohort, sessions longer than 19 minutes were associated with the lowest rate of sudden cardiac death compared with sessions under 11 minutes (Laukkanen et al., 2015) — but that is an observational association in Finnish men, not a recommended dose.
