How Long Should You Stay In A Sauna?

The Short Answer

Most commonly used sauna sessions run 15–20 minutes at temperatures between 80–100°C in a traditional sauna. Multiple shorter rounds (typically 2–3 rounds of 10–15 minutes with cooling breaks in between) are customary in Finnish sauna culture. It is worth being clear about what the evidence can and cannot tell you here: in the largest long-term study of Finnish sauna use, sessions longer than 19 minutes were associated with better cardiovascular outcomes than sessions under 11 minutes (Laukkanen et al., 2015), but a systematic review of 40 clinical studies concluded that the optimal frequency and duration of sauna bathing has not yet been established and needs further research (Hussain & Cohen, 2018).

The "right" duration depends on your experience level, health status, the temperature of the sauna, and your goals.

What the Research Says

The most substantial evidence on sauna duration comes from the KIHD (Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease) study, which followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for around 21 years. This landmark prospective cohort study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine by Tanjaniina Laukkanen and colleagues, found dose-dependent associations between sauna use and health outcomes (Laukkanen et al., 2015): PubMed: 25705824.

Men who used the sauna 4–7 times per week had a lower risk of sudden cardiac death, cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality than men who used it once a week (for sudden cardiac death, hazard ratio 0.37, 95% CI 0.18–0.75). Looking specifically at session length, sessions of more than 19 minutes were associated with a lower risk of sudden cardiac death than sessions of less than 11 minutes (hazard ratio 0.48, 95% CI 0.31–0.75) (Laukkanen et al., 2015).

Two important caveats apply to all of this. First, this is observational research in Finnish men, so it shows association, not cause and effect — people who sauna more often may differ in other ways from people who do not. Second, the longest duration category studied was "more than 19 minutes", which tells you that longer sessions tracked with better outcomes in this cohort, not that there is an ideal number of minutes.

A separate analysis of the same cohort found that men using the sauna 4–7 times per week had a lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease than once-a-week users (Laukkanen et al., 2017): PubMed: 27932366. That finding related to how often men used the sauna rather than how long each session lasted.

A 2018 review in Mayo Clinic Proceedings by Laukkanen, Laukkanen and Kunutsor summarised the wider body of evidence, reporting that sauna bathing may be linked to a reduced risk of vascular and non-vascular conditions and describing the circulatory and vascular mechanisms proposed to explain it (Laukkanen et al., 2018): PubMed: 30077204. It is a narrative review of the evidence rather than a trial of session lengths, and it does not establish a single optimal duration.

Duration Guidelines by Experience Level

The ranges below are practical starting points drawn from customary sauna practice and the session lengths typically used in research, not clinically validated dosing protocols. No trial has tested these progressions against each other. Treat them as a conservative way to build tolerance, and adjust to how you actually feel.

Beginners (first 1–4 weeks)

  • Start with 5–10 minutes per round
  • Use a lower bench position (cooler temperature)
  • Take longer cooling breaks between rounds
  • Limit to 1–2 rounds per session
  • Drink water before and after

Intermediate Users (1–3 months)

  • 10–15 minutes per round
  • 2–3 rounds per session
  • Cooling break of 5–10 minutes between rounds (cold shower, cold plunge, or outdoor cool-down)
  • Total session time: 30–60 minutes

Experienced Users (3+ months)

  • 15–20 minutes per round at 80–100°C
  • 2–3 rounds per session
  • Active cooling between rounds (contrast therapy)
  • Total session time: 45–90 minutes

Does Longer Mean Better?

Not necessarily. Heat exposure is generally described as producing benefits through a hormetic response — a controlled stress that triggers adaptation. This is a proposed mechanism rather than something demonstrated by dose-finding trials in saunas. The goal is to find a dose you can tolerate comfortably and repeat consistently, not to maximise duration.

Staying in a sauna beyond your tolerance can lead to dehydration, dizziness and cardiovascular strain, and a clinical review of the benefits and risks of sauna bathing notes acute cardiovascular and hormonal changes with heat exposure (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001). Beyond the 19-minute threshold reported in the Finnish cohort, there is no good evidence identifying a point at which additional minutes stop helping, and no trial has established a safe upper limit for a single round. Extending sessions well past your comfortable tolerance adds risk without any demonstrated additional benefit.

Signs You Should Exit the Sauna

Regardless of elapsed time, exit the sauna immediately if you experience:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Heart palpitations
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excessive weakness
  • Feeling of overheating or confusion

These are signs that your body has reached its limit. They should always be respected, regardless of how long you have been in the sauna.

Two further safety points are worth stating plainly. Never combine alcohol with sauna use: alcohol consumption during sauna bathing increases the risk of hypotension, arrhythmia and sudden death (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001). And if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, speak to your doctor before using a sauna and avoid it in the first trimester — a systematic review and meta-analysis found maternal hyperthermia in early pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of neural tube defects (pooled odds ratio 1.92, 95% CI 1.61–2.29) (Moretti et al., 2005). Sauna use is also contraindicated in unstable angina, recent myocardial infarction and severe aortic stenosis (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001).

Sauna Duration and Specific Goals

For Recovery

Sauna protocols in the athletic literature vary and are not standardised. One controlled study of endurance runners used 30-minute post-training sauna sessions at 87°C and reported changes in plasma volume and heart rate variability consistent with heat acclimation (Stanley et al., 2015). Heat exposure is often discussed in terms of heat shock protein activation, but that is a proposed mechanism — it has not been shown that a specific session length produces faster muscle repair in humans. For Sleep

Sleep is one of the most commonly reported subjective benefits of sauna use: in the Global Sauna Survey, an international cross-sectional survey of 482 sauna users, 83.5% of respondents reported sleep benefits after sauna use (Hussain et al., 2019). This is self-reported data from people who already sauna regularly, not a controlled sleep trial, so it should be read as an association rather than a demonstrated effect. For Mental Health

In the same survey, people who used the sauna 5–15 times per month reported higher mental wellbeing scores than less frequent users (Hussain et al., 2019) — again, an association in self-reported data. Separately, a randomised sham-controlled trial found a single session of medically supervised whole-body hyperthermia reduced depression scores in adults with major depressive disorder (Janssen et al., 2016). That was a clinical hyperthermia procedure, not a consumer sauna, and the two should not be treated as equivalent. Infrared Sauna vs Traditional Sauna: Does Duration Change?

Infrared saunas operate at lower temperatures (typically 45–65°C) and heat the body differently to a traditional Finnish sauna. Because the modality and temperature differ, findings from Finnish sauna research cannot be assumed to transfer to infrared, and the infrared evidence base is considerably thinner: a review of the published far-infrared sauna literature concluded the evidence supporting manufacturers' health claims is limited (Beever, 2009). There is no established evidence-based session length for infrared saunas, so follow the manufacturer's guidance and your own tolerance rather than a research-derived number. Can you stay in a sauna for too long?

Yes. Staying in a sauna beyond your tolerance increases the risk of dehydration, hyperthermia and cardiovascular stress, and heat exposure produces acute cardiovascular changes even in healthy people (Hannuksela & Ellahham, 2001). Always listen to your body and exit when you feel uncomfortable.

Is a 30-minute sauna too long?

There is no research that establishes a safe upper limit for a single sauna round, so this comes down to tolerance rather than a validated cut-off. Many experienced users are comfortable with longer sessions at moderate temperatures, and one heat-acclimation study used supervised 30-minute sessions at 87°C in trained athletes (Stanley et al., 2015). For most people, breaking a longer session into two rounds of around 15 minutes with a cool-down between them is a more conservative approach, particularly at higher temperatures.
