Choosing a sauna heater

Get the size right first. Everything else follows from it.

Heater, or climate device?

A heater warms the room. The Saunum Base and Base S are climate devices: they circulate the heat your heater already makes and add salt air to it. They do not heat a sauna on their own. If you're building a sauna, you need a heater; a climate device is an upgrade on top.

What size heater does my sauna need?

Enter your sauna's internal dimensions for a starting point. As a rule of thumb, allow about 1 kW per 1.3 m³ of well-insulated room.

The kW figure is an estimate, not a final answer. Size from the manufacturer's rated room range for each heater, and allow extra for glass or other uninsulated surfaces.

Fuel

Electric, or wood-fired?

Electric is the default: set-and-forget, timer and WiFi options, but it needs the right power supply. Wood-fired needs no wiring and gives the traditional experience. It just takes longer to heat and needs a flue.

Control

App control, or manual?

WiFi models (Harvia Xenio, Saunum Leil) let you preheat from your phone on the way home. Manual heaters put the controls on the unit: simpler, and nothing to pair.

Don't forget

Stones and control unit

Most heaters need 20–160 kg of stones, usually supplied separately, so budget for them. Some electric heaters also need a separate control unit.

Common questions

What kW do I need?

As a rough guide, allow about 1 kW per 1.3 m³ of a well-insulated room, more for glass fronts or log walls. Use the sizing tool above, then check each heater's manufacturer-rated room range.
