How to choose

Choosing a sauna

Four decisions narrow 20-plus saunas down to the right one. Answers first.

Form

Barrel, cabin, or glass?

Barrel heats fast and suits a compact outdoor spot. Cabin gives more headroom and bench space, indoor or out. Glass-front is the premium, view-first option.

Capacity

How many bathers?

Two-person models start near 2–3 m³. Families want 4–6 seats; entertainers up to 8. Bigger rooms need a bigger heater.

Place

Indoor, or outdoor?

Most models state which they suit. Outdoor units are built for the weather; indoor installs need clearances and ventilation. Check each product page.

Budget for it

Is a heater included?

Most cabins and barrels ship without a heater. Add a heater and stones to your budget. See sauna heaters →

The evidence

Why a sauna?

Large Finnish cohort studies link regular sauna use with better cardiovascular outcomes and lower all-cause mortality. The association is strong but observational. We set out what it does and doesn't prove.

Before you buy

Base & foundation

Saunas are heavy: from about 270 kg to well over a tonne. You'll need a level, load-bearing base (compacted pad, pavers or a slab) before delivery.

Delivery & assembly

Larger cabins may need crane or forklift access, so check the path from the truck to the final spot; freight is quoted by postcode. Kit saunas arrive flat-packed with instructions; some are modular and near turn-key.

Electrical for the heater

Plan the heater's power supply with the sauna. Larger heaters often need 3-phase. Sauna heaters →

Common questions

Barrel or cabin?

Barrels heat quickly and cost less; cabins offer more space and a more even heat. Barrel vs cabin →

Which timber?

Thermally modified aspen, spruce and cedar each behave differently on heat, movement and cost. Best wood for a sauna →

Indoor or outdoor?

Both work; outdoor needs weather-rated construction and a base, indoor needs clearances and ventilation. Each product page states what it suits.
