Wellness Technology Accessories: Elevate Every Session

The right accessories make a wellness routine easier to keep up with.

Accessories are the least glamorous part of a wellness technology setup, and they are also where a lot of money gets wasted. A drawer full of unused gadgets is a common outcome. So before we introduce our upcoming accessories range, it is worth being honest about what these products can reasonably do — and what they cannot.

The short version: a good accessory removes friction. It makes a session more comfortable, protects a device you have already paid for, or gives you information you would not otherwise have. What it does not do is add a therapeutic effect that the main device was not already delivering. Keep that distinction in mind and you will buy far less, and use far more of what you buy.

Wearable biometric trackers

Smart rings and wristbands continuously estimate things like heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen saturation, sleep stages, skin temperature and daily movement. Their genuine value is longitudinal: one reading tells you very little, but eight weeks of readings can show you that your resting heart rate creeps up in the week after a heavy training block, or that your sleep shortens whenever you train late.

Heart rate variability is the metric most people fixate on. A 2025 narrative review of HRV monitoring in athletes concluded that routine, near-daily measurement is more informative than isolated one-off readings, and recommended looking at weekly averages and the variation around them rather than reacting to any single day's number [1]. That is a useful rule for non-athletes too: treat the trend line as the signal and the daily figure as noise.

Where the accuracy limits sit

It is worth knowing what these sensors are and are not good at, because the marketing rarely says.

Sleep staging is the weakest link. In a 2021 validation study, 53 adolescents wore a sleep-tracking ring during overnight polysomnography — the clinical gold standard — across multiple nights. The ring underestimated total sleep time by roughly 33 to 47 minutes on average, and the authors concluded plainly that its sleep staging "needs improvement", while rating its overall performance comparable to a research-grade actigraph [2]. In other words, the light/deep/REM breakdown on your app each morning is an estimate, not a measurement.

Optical sensors do not perform identically on all skin. These devices work by shining light into the skin and reading what bounces back, and melanin changes how that light behaves. A 2023 systematic review of ten studies covering 469 participants found the evidence inconclusive overall, but noted that four of the ten studies reported reduced heart rate accuracy in people with darker skin tones, four found no effect, and two were mixed [3]. The honest summary is that this is an open question, not a settled one.

Blood-oxygen readings deserve particular caution. A 2025 systematic review of 42 studies of clinical pulse oximeters found consistent evidence that they overestimate oxygen saturation in people with darker skin tones, especially at lower saturation levels [4]. Consumer wearables are not clinical pulse oximeters and have not been assessed to the same standard, so we would treat a wearable's blood-oxygen figure as a rough trend indicator only. If you have a genuine concern about your oxygen levels, that is a conversation for your GP, not an app.

None of this makes trackers useless. It makes them what they actually are: consumer instruments that are good at detecting change in an individual over time, and poor at producing clinical-grade absolute numbers.

Protective eyewear for light therapy

Red light therapy panels are bright, and looking directly into a high-output LED array is uncomfortable. Reputable manufacturers generally supply eyewear or advise against staring into the panel during a session, and following the guidance that came with your specific device is the right default.

Being straight about the evidence: we are not aware of good-quality research establishing that home red and near-infrared panels cause eye injury at typical session distances and durations, and we will not imply otherwise. The practical case for goggles is more mundane. They let you keep your eyes open and relaxed through a full facial or upper-body session instead of squinting, which makes it far more likely you will position yourself properly and actually finish the session. Comfort drives consistency, and consistency is what matters with any light therapy protocol.

Grounding and earthing products

Grounding, also called earthing, is the practice of putting the body in direct electrical contact with the Earth — most simply by standing barefoot outdoors. Conductive mats, sheets and bands are designed to approximate that contact indoors while you sleep, work or sit.

Research into earthing exists but is early-stage: studies are typically small, short, and difficult to blind properly, since people usually know whether they are on a grounded mat. We are not going to tell you it reduces inflammation or improves sleep, because the evidence does not currently support a claim of that strength. We list grounding products as comfort and lifestyle accessories. Some people enjoy them; that is a legitimate reason to own one, and it is the only reason we will offer.

Cases, storage and device care

The least discussed accessories are often the ones that pay for themselves. Wellness devices are expensive, and most damage is avoidable: a cracked LED panel from being stacked against a wall, a frayed cable at the connector, a hydrogen generator scaled up from hard tap water.

Practical basics that apply across most devices:

  • Padded cases and covers matter most for anything you travel with or move between rooms. Static, well-supported equipment needs them least.
  • Cable management is the single cheapest form of protection. The connector is almost always the first failure point.
  • Follow the manufacturer's cleaning and water-quality instructions rather than general advice, including ours — requirements differ meaningfully between devices, particularly for anything involving water.
  • Keep the paperwork. Warranty claims on wellness technology often turn on proof of correct use and purchase date.

How to decide whether an accessory is worth it

A simple test before you buy anything on this page or any other: name the specific friction it removes. If you cannot finish the sentence "I currently don't do X because Y, and this fixes Y," the accessory is probably decoration.

Three questions that tend to sort it out:

  • Does it protect something expensive? Cases and covers usually justify themselves on replacement cost alone.
  • Does it make a session more comfortable? Comfort is not trivial — it is the main determinant of whether you keep going after week three.
  • Does it tell you something you would act on? A tracker is worth it if you would genuinely change your training or bedtime based on a trend. If you would just look at the number, it is entertainment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tracker to benefit from a sauna, ice bath or light panel?

No. A tracker measures; it does not contribute to the effect. It is useful if you like data and will act on it, and unnecessary if you would not.

Can I trust the sleep stages my ring reports?

Treat them as estimates. Validation work against clinical polysomnography found sleep staging to be the weakest aspect of ring-based tracking, even where overall sleep and wake detection performed reasonably [2]. Total sleep time and night-to-night trends are more dependable than the stage breakdown.

Are goggles compulsory with red light therapy?

Follow the instructions supplied with your device. Beyond that, we regard eyewear as a sensible precaution and a comfort aid rather than something established as medically necessary.

Does grounding actually work?

The current evidence is too limited and too mixed for us to say. If you find a grounding mat pleasant, that is reason enough to use one — we would not buy it expecting a therapeutic result.
