Can a Sauna Make You Happier? What the Evidence Shows

Plenty of people describe feeling calmer after a sauna. Here is what the research does — and does not — say about that.

Ask anyone who saunas regularly how they feel afterwards and you will hear the same words again and again: calm, light, content. That experience is widely reported and worth taking seriously. What is far less settled is why it happens, and how much of it a sauna itself is responsible for.

At Elysian Solara, we would rather give you the honest version than the flattering one. So here is what the evidence currently supports about heat, mood and wellbeing — including the parts where the research is thinner than the internet suggests.

First, an Important Distinction: Sauna vs Whole-Body Hyperthermia

Almost every headline linking heat to mood traces back to a body of research on whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) — a medically supervised procedure that raises core body temperature to a target of roughly 38–39 °C under monitoring, using infrared heating chambers or hot-water immersion [4]. That is not the same thing as a sauna session at home.

The difference matters. In WBH studies, core temperature is the treatment variable and it is deliberately driven to a clinical target by trained staff. In a home or gym sauna, you heat the air around you, you get out when you want to, and nobody is measuring your core temperature. Findings from one do not automatically transfer to the other — and throughout this article we have kept the two clearly separated.

What the Heat-and-Mood Research Actually Found

The most rigorous study in this area is a 2016 randomised, double-blind trial published in JAMA Psychiatry. Thirty adults with major depressive disorder received either a single session of whole-body hyperthermia or a sham session designed to mimic everything about the procedure except the intense heat. The active group showed significantly lower depression scores than the sham group at every follow-up across six weeks [1].

That is a genuinely interesting result, and it is worth being precise about its limits: it is a single session, in 30 people, in a clinical setting, using a medical hyperthermia device, in people diagnosed with major depression. It tells us something real about heat and mood biology. It does not tell us what a Tuesday-evening sauna does for someone who is generally well.

A related research letter in the American Journal of Psychiatry reported that the antidepressant response in these WBH studies was associated with the body's cooling response afterwards, rather than the heating phase alone [3]. It is a small, preliminary report and a proposed mechanism — not an established one — but it is a plausible reason why the settled, cooled-down feeling after heat exposure might matter as much as the heat itself.

When researchers pooled this literature in 2019, they found seven studies covering 148 people in total, with several lacking control groups. Their own conclusion was that WBH is promising but still lacks sufficient evidence for general recommendations for clinical practice [4]. That is the honest state of play, stated by the people who know the field best.

One study did use an actual sauna. In a small 2005 trial, 28 inpatients with mild depression were randomised to either far-infrared dry sauna sessions at 60 °C or usual care over four weeks. The sauna group reported significantly better relaxation scores and fewer somatic complaints; the difference in mental complaints did not reach statistical significance [5]. Twenty-eight supervised inpatients is a small, specific study — but it is the closest thing we have to sauna-specific evidence on mood, and it points modestly in the same direction.

Stress Hormones: A More Complicated Picture Than You Will Read Elsewhere

You will often see it stated that saunas lower cortisol. The evidence does not currently support putting it that plainly.

A 2021 mechanistic review examining sauna bathing in high-stress occupations looked at exactly this question and concluded that the data are scarce, and that markers of stress — including cortisol, beta-endorphins and adrenocorticotropic hormone — respond in a highly variable manner to acute heat exposure [2]. Variable means some studies find one thing and some find another, likely because session length, temperature and frequency differ so much between them.

So the accurate version is this: heat clearly does something to the stress-hormone system, but the direction and size of the effect are not yet consistent enough to promise you a cortisol reduction. What many people do report is the subjective side — feeling less wound-up afterwards. That experience is real and it is worth having. It just is not the same as a demonstrated hormonal effect, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Sleep, and Why It Probably Matters Most

Mood and sleep are closely connected — poor sleep flattens mood, frays patience and drains energy. Many people find that a sauna in the evening, followed by the natural cool-down afterwards, fits comfortably into a wind-down routine before bed.

We want to be straight with you here: dedicated research on saunas and sleep quality is limited, and we are not aware of strong trial evidence establishing that a sauna improves sleep. Treat this as a sensible, widely reported practical benefit rather than a proven one. The Quiet Power of Ritual and Me-Time

There is also something simpler at work, and it may be doing more of the heavy lifting than any biological mechanism.

Carving out regular time that is just for you — unhurried, screen-free, restorative — is broadly recognised as good for wellbeing. In busy lives, that kind of protected space is rare. A sauna ritual gives you a reliable appointment with calm, and the sense of looking after yourself is itself a quiet source of contentment. No study needs to prove that to you; you will notice it within a fortnight of building the habit.

A Shared Experience

Saunas can be social, too. Sharing the warmth with a partner, family or friends creates unhurried, device-free time together, and close social connection is one of the more consistently observed contributors to wellbeing across the general literature. Whether you use it for solitude or togetherness, a sauna creates space for the things people tend to find genuinely good.

Keeping Expectations Honest

A sauna can be a pleasant, restorative part of your week. It is not a treatment for depression or persistent low mood, and nothing in this article should be read as suggesting you use one in place of care.

The clinical trials showing mood effects used medically supervised whole-body hyperthermia protocols, not a consumer sauna, and the researchers who reviewed that literature concluded the evidence is not yet sufficient to support clinical recommendations [4]. FAQ: Saunas and Mood

Why do I feel so good after a sauna?

Honestly, nobody has pinned this down precisely. The leading proposed explanation comes from whole-body hyperthermia research, where the antidepressant response appeared to track the body's cooling phase afterwards rather than the heat alone [3]. Add to that the physical easing of tension and the simple fact of taking uninterrupted time out, and you have a reasonable partial explanation. Those clinical findings used medical hyperthermia devices, not a home sauna [1].

Do saunas lower cortisol?

Not reliably, on current evidence. A 2021 review found that cortisol and other stress markers respond in a highly variable way to acute heat exposure, and described the data as scarce [2]. Anyone telling you a sauna will lower your cortisol is going beyond what the research shows.

Can a sauna improve my mood long term?

There is no good long-term trial answering this in generally well people. A regular ritual may support mood indirectly through better wind-down, reduced tension and restorative time to yourself, but that is a reasonable expectation rather than a demonstrated outcome.

Is a sauna a treatment for depression?

No. Clinical heat-therapy research on mood is early, small, and uses medically supervised protocols rather than consumer saunas, and its own authors say the evidence does not yet support clinical recommendations [4]. How often should I use a sauna?
